Matt spent his junior years from the age of 12 upwards as a goalkeeper having made the move from Centre half. He quickly settled into the position and played through the junior ranks representing Jersey at Under 15 & 18 level.
At the age of 17 Matt was invited for trials (which for Jersey was extremely rare) to Derby County courtesy of current Derby goalkeeper coach Eric Steele.
Unfortunately this plus another trial at Barnsley did not work out for Matt, but this just opened his eyes to the fact a professional career was not to be. He then spent 4 years at Sheffield Hallam University representing the university side during his time there as well as time spent playing for a local Sheffield team and starting his coaching career.
On returning to Jersey in 2004, he carried on playing for another 3 years with St Lawrence FC before “retiring” to focus on coaching. Between 2003 & 2006 Matt had taken the 2 first steps on the coaching ladder via the Sheffield FA. With these qualifications Matt spent 2 summers working in America with youngsters from 3-16 of all abilities. Matt worked with both outfielders and goalkeepers and even did some extra goalkeeper training for a local youth club in the area during his evenings. Having caught the coaching bug Matt then returned to Jersey and managed to get a voluntary coaching role within local team Rozel Rovers working with their Under 16 & 18 teams over the next 7 years. During this time he was also asked to assist the Jersey ladies team goalkeepers in there preparation before the 2011 Island Games.
From 2013/14 season, Matt then focused his coaching attention solely on the junior goalkeepers within Rozel Rovers holding bi-monthly training sessions with all the keepers. In addition to this Matt Is also Assistant Manager / GK Coach at St Peters ladies team. He has helped the St Peters goalkeeper work her way into the Jersey ladies squad which is great recognition of the hard work put in. Matt is always willing to learn and keep his qualifications up to date. He loves reading coaching books, watching DVDs and learning from various coaches. He has been fortunate enough to receive training off some great former keepers – Eric Steele, Steve Sutton, Mart Poom to name a couple and with his hero being the great Neville Southall , Matt certainly loves to instill some high standards.
